Microwave Oven Installation – Do it Yourself Guide

Monday, February 15th, 2010

There is no doubt about it; the microwave oven is one of the 100 inventions that have changed the world today and without it most of us would probably be unable to prepare breakfast or reheat dinner at all. Microwave oven installation itself is not as simple as pressing a button and waiting for the corn to pop.

First of all congratulations on your new purchase, I am guessing you are all excited about it and can’t wait to fire it up. A word of caution here, it is advisable to take the time to install your oven properly as a poorly installed device will not function as it should. It will not heat or cook food properly and may even become a hazard to you and your family.
Your oven most likely came packaged in its own box with plastic and foam and other trappings. Remove them all carefully, remember to take care to check the inside of the oven for any packing material, else you might accidentally cook it, and be careful when unpacking the turntable. Almost all of them are made of glass which is sturdy but breakable. All plastic packing material needs to be taken off, ditto for Styrofoam and cardboard as they will either melt or catch fire. Neither of which are what you had in mind when you wanted to cook.

When deciding where to place the microwave in your kitchen, here are some factors to keep in mind. It needs to be close to an outlet to avoid wires getting in the way. It should be kept far away from a heat source, for e.g. don’t install it above the burners. You can mount it on the wall, keep in on the countertop or tuck it out of sight in a cabinet. Make sure the door can swing open without hindrance and it can be cleaned easily. In case you have children, place it on a higher level if you don’t want them to use it or within their reach if they would be using it frequently.
As with all electrical appliances that are used frequently, like your television, it is better to give the microwave oven its own plug and not use a multi-socket or an extension cord. Make sure that the plug of the microwave fits the electrical socket exactly. This is where you may want to give your electrician or handyman a call, to ensure that the wiring is done safely and properly.

Though installing a microwave is almost as easy as using it to cook something, you may want to keep the above guidelines in mind.

Your microwave oven will also most likely come with its own installation guide. It’s a good idea to read that thoroughly before installing the microwave and you can always call the manufacturer if you have any questions about the product or how to install it.

The Most Popular Refrigerators Available Today

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

It used to be that when you wanted a new refrigerator, you just went to Sears and got one. They all looked more or less the same, although the size varied a little. These days, you have all kinds of choices when it comes to refrigerators. There are a number of different types, and they come in a dizzying array of styles. Here is a guide to the most popular refrigerators available today.

The French Door Refrigerator

A relative newcomer on the fridge scene is the French door design. These refrigerators tend to be on the big side. They have two doors that open side by side to enable easy access to the refrigerator. The upper part is completely dedicated to the fridge. Underneath the refrigerator is the freezer, which is full sized as well. The French Door style has become increasingly popular lately, as people are finding that they just need more room in their refrigerators to fit their food in.

The Side by Side Refrigerator

Although this style has been available for quite some time now, it is still as popular as ever. These refrigerators have a freezer on one side (usually the left), and a refrigerator on the other. This type of fridge freezer is a good choice if you like having a large freezer. In addition, the shelf-style freezer offers easy access to frozen items, which means no more digging through frozen food piled on top of each other.

The Counter Depth Refrigerator

Another new style that we’ve been seeing lately is the counter depth refrigerator. These fridges are not as deep as normal ones, and therefore don’t stick out past the cabinets. Many people want their entire kitchen to blend in, and don’t want a big and bulky refrigerator sticking out. This is a good way to get an integrated refrigerator cheaply. They are more expensive than normal refrigerators, but cost a lot less than a completely built in fridge.

The Integrated Fridge

At the top of the refrigerator food chain is the integrated fridge. What makes these so special is that they completely blend in with the other items in your kitchen, such as your cabinets, dishwasher, etc. You might not even know it is a fridge, except for the handle on the door. Some people choose a color for their kitchen, like black or white, and make everything that color. Another popular choice is stainless steel. It is easy to find appliances in this chrome color, and they blend in with each other perfectly.

Dishwashers For Small Families

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Dishwashers have become very popular. Both domestic and commercial dishwashers are widely used and demand for the appliance has increased considerably in the markets. Dishwasher has become an unavoidable gadget in homes when hectic work schedules force homemakers to save time for leisure. In commercial establishments shortage in the availability of workforce is the main reason for using machines. Better quality cleaning and hygiene are added advantages of using dishwashers.

But there are some reservations. Small families and singles have apprehensions about this appliance. There is a general perception that dishwasher is not an essential home appliance for singles, couples or small families. According to some consumers, to clean limited number of dishes and pans, manual cleaning is more economical. Moreover in small households and apartments, dishwasher will be a space consuming gadget and may tend to be an underutilized or redundant commodity.

But experience has taught consumers that dishwasher is yet another effective device to save time and physical exertion in the contemporary lifestyles. Single persons or couples can choose smaller machines that are designed to suit their purposes. There are varieties of small and compact dishwashers available in the markets. A particular model which is 45cm x 45cm size will fit into a small kitchen.

It features all those facilities that are available in a large sized machine. As in the case of modern dishwashers, these smaller versions are also eco-friendly. They consume less water, energy and make no noise. Water consumption will be about 4 gallons compared to 24 gallons generally consumed for manual washing. The machine is available both in free standing or built-in models.

Another model of 60cm x 45cm with 4 place settings consumes only 5 times less water and 25 percent less energy than earlier models of dishwashers. Many of the compact dishwashers are equipped to run on appropriate and pre- planned programmes. Electronic sensors are capable to measure the level of dirt on the dishes. They also calculate the time required for washing as well as the quantity of water required.

Temperature of the water can be adjusted as and when it is required. Dishes with stubborn crust or oily residues will require higher water temperature. Even though small in size, it is equipped with retractable cutlery basket and adjustable crockery trays. The compact machine can be conveniently tucked underneath the worktop or can be placed upon it without causing inconvenience to the kitchen users.

Even though the use of dishwasher is very much prevalent, many consumers or prospective shoppers are not aware of the availability of several types and models of dishwashers in the contemporary markets. Small but stylish devices suitable for small kitchens are economically priced to make them affordable to everyone. Special websites dealing exclusively with dishwashers are good sources to avail detailed information about such products. Online dealers offer fabulous gifts and discounts.

Foolproof warranty and after sale service are additional benefits bestowed on the consumers who have doubts about the durability and reliability of the products. Before buying a suitable dishwasher, the shopper should visit the special websites and go through the product reviews posted therein. This will help the prospective users to gather valuable tips on the methods of operating the machine and about its maintenance.

A Honda Generator Ensures You Don’t Skip a Beat

Friday, November 13th, 2009

There is nothing worse than being left out in the dark, literally! Power outages can be dangerous and inconvenient and with today’s modern appliances and technology, dependency on electricity is even more critical than it was years ago. Without a generator, power outages can cause pipes to freeze, food spoilage, heat loss, cause mold to grow, and plastic to crack. This is especially applicable if you live in the southern United States, where tropical storms or hurricanes are frequent. Gas generators and diesel generators are advanced in design, and housing and permanent household generators are much smaller, smarter, and quieter than the older models. If you live in an area where storms are common, power outages with their grim regularity are certainly worth the price of a standby power system. Power grids are shared in such states as New England, the Carolinas and Florida. Therefore, if you live in North Carolina, a power outage in Florida would affect you, as well.

With portable generators, such as the diesel generator or gas generator, these devices can be loud, run on gasoline or diesel fuel and are hard to move. They can replace part of your household load if an electrical outage occurs, but you’re only able to run a limited number of appliances at any one time. There are some remarkable manufacturers on the market that produce excellent portable generators such as the Honda generator or Generac generator. A permanent backup system can run off your home’s propane or natural gas supply and can be directly wired into the household circuit panel. In the event of an outage, they will provide a seamless switch from the utility service to backup power. You can purchase residential standby generators systems such as Kohler that will monitor your home’s utility power for interruption. If a power outage occurs, a switch automatically starts the generator and transfers the electrical load bringing your power back again. Such companies as Generac generators market fully- integrated systems that feature switching devices and distribution panels. The generator is usually in addition to these systems. There is usually only a 7 to 10 second outage with most built-in generating systems when a power outage occurs.

You can also direct where you want the emergency power diverted to, such as the essentials like the furnace, various appliances, and security systems of course, if you want the whole house run by generating your own power, you’re going to need a powerful generator and a transfer switch that carries the same rating as your home’s main distribution panel. A transfer switch is essentially the same as a glorified electrical panel and comes in manual and automatic models. You’re going to pay more for the automatic system, which is also going to give you ongoing protection and reassurance for the future. If you decide on the manual transfer switch, you will have to power up the generator yourself and manually switch the load to the backup system. In neighborhoods that enforce noise restrictions, permanent generators are preferred. Manufacturers are constantly trying to reduce noise output from their units. Many popular portable generator manufacturers such as Yamaha generators and Coleman generators are starting to introduce permanent power generating systems into their product lines. Generators that are considered to be permanent are rated by their maximum electrical output measured in kilowatts. The best way to determine what size of generator to purchase is to list all of your appliances and items that will be run during a power outage and calculate the total wattage that these consume. Remember, when an appliance starts up there are surge requirements, which is usually higher than the normal running wattage needs and this needs to be calculated in your figure. The best way to determine what wattage you are going to need for your backup power system is to call an electrician.

Your Diesel Generator Will Ensure the Lights Are On When Somebody’s Home

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

If you’re considering putting a permanent power generating system such as a Yamaha generator, in your home or office, this is definitely a job for the experts! Any wiring that is done to the transfer switch and circuit board will need to be done according to your local electrical code and you may need a plumber in to set up the hoses and connect the Yamaha generator to the home’s fuel supply.

Diesel generator dealers that are licensed will generally oversee the installation process, and some companies will a secure a permit and schedule the electrical inspection as part of your purchase price. Prices will vary, but you’ll find that a 12 kW generator package excluding the transfer switch to be somewhere in the vicinity of US$1,000-$7,000. A 20 kW package will run you somewhere in the vicinity of $8-$10,000. Many brand-name manufacturers are now making home power generating systems such as Generac generators, Honda generators and Kohler more affordable. Most manufacturers encourage homeowners to hire electrical contractors for installation, as these are not do-it-yourself jobs. If you decide to install a permanent diesel generator somewhere outside your home, it should usually be on a concrete pad near the utility meter. Some generators come with a built in mounting pad and you may want to consider these instead of pouring your own concrete pad. As a rule, the unit is usually run off your home fuel supply and you’ll need to connect it to the propane or natural gas supply.

The transfer switch is commonly installed inside next to the distribution panel and wiring is run from the generator into the house. Once the transfer switch is connected, it monitors your home’s power supply for any interruptions. Backup power from Honda generators or diesel generators is almost becoming a necessity in today’s technology-driven world. There are many more electrical items to run now other than lights, heating, cooling system and appliances. Most homes have computer systems, home automation systems and security systems. Electrical regulation has caused complete power outages in many areas and is more prevalent than years gone by.

It is almost essential that when bad weather knocks out your power for days or possibly weeks on end that you have a Honda generator backup power system. A self-contained backup system will help keep your phones ringing, water running, computers running and the furnace keeping your home warm, too. Pipes freezing are also a hazard when power loss occurs, and if you live in an area where intruders could be a problem, your security system on all the time will keep them at bay, too. It’s important to understand what a “watt” means if you’re going to install a home power generating system. This starts with an assessment of your basic needs, and you’ll want to calculate the complete wattage that your home consumes at any one time. If you’re at a loss as far as to this calculation, call your electrician and have him do it for you. Such items as heating, cooling, security systems, fans, refrigeration and lighting are some of the items that you need to consider. The size of your diesel generator backup system is based on the essential wattage that you’re going to need. When this calculation is done, it is important to remember that you must accommodate the peak power load that these devices will supply. You must make allowances for power surges as well as appliances that are considered to be steady-rate. A good example of a high-demand system with high startup power is your furnace. If your furnace has a low start motor, this will still tax the load a bit. Energy-efficient appliances will directly impact how much load a backup power source can support. If you’re in an area that loses power often, you may be well advised to get rid of the energy hogs and replace them with more energy-efficient appliances. If you use electric heat, a gas or wood stove is a great addition. Let a reputable generator dealer in your local area assess your true wattage needs. This way you’ll be more confident when you purchase your Yamaha generator system.

Eureka Vacuum Cleaner

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Vacuum cleaners are a household necessity. Though these only became affordable to the middle class at the end of the Second World War, studies have shown that almost each home in the United States has one to help clean the home.

One company that has competed well with others in the market is Eureka. Though not many people know the old name, people are more familiar with Electrolux that is believed to capture 25% of the world’s household appliance market.

In some countries, Electrolux agents are sent house to house to conduct a free demonstration in the hopes that the customer will buy the product. The company considers this to be an excellent strategy since the other competitors mainly rely on having the product distributed in a store.

There have been a lot of improvements that people can find in buying a Eureka vacuum cleaner.

One, the user doesn’t need to buy replacement bags anymore when a lot of dirt has already been connected in the machine. This is because this has been replaced with a cup that can be taken out and the contents are thrown in the trash so this can be used again.

Next, the handle is looped and not straight that a lot of companies are still using. This new design allows the vacuum cleaner to be used by anyone regardless of age. This also provides better control allowing the person to use this in hard to reach places making sure all the dirt has be removed.

Another feature in the Eureka vacuum cleaner is that it has great suction power. Even if the machine bought only has a 3 or 8 amp motor, it is still able to do the same job done by a bigger and stronger appliance. This allows it to take away dirt, dust and animal hair wherever it may be.

Some machines tip over when this is pulled toward the user. The Eureka has also been tested which prevents this from happening.

Filters are still needed in the vacuum cleaner. Those on the Eureka can be brushed or washed a few times before the individual will have to buy a new one to replace it. Those who are concerned about the price don’t have to worry since it won’t cost an arm or a leg since this is just under $10.

If people want quality, the person should choose a brand that has served the consumer well through the years such as the vacuum cleaners produced by Eureka.
