Building Your First Greenhouse? Here is a Simple List of Essential Growing and Building Supplies

If you’re planning on building a your first cheap greenhouse, here is a quick list of some essential supplies.


1. Timers – these helpful clocks can be used for water, ventilation, heating and cooling. This type of automation will help you take your mind off of things when you’re away from your greenhouse.


2. Thermostats – Because temperature control is essential for any greenhouse, you will need at least one. One inside and one outside would be ideal with both thermostats away from direct sunlight.


3. Ground Covering – For weed protection. Weeds sprout everywhere and if you want a second line of defense from bugs, don’t forget the ground cover.


4. Ventilation system – To help control with humidity and temperature, vents are needed for proper airflow in the summer and air protection in the winter.


5. Thermometers – Measuring temperature is just the beginning. Don’t forget measuring light, soil, and humidity. For the well being of your plants, good measurable devices should be everywhere.


6. Fans – To help with circulation, fans can assist distributing cold or warm air in dead spots.


7. Lights – Whether it’s heating or growing lights, proper lighting is essential. Many greenhouses are lighted almost 24 hours a day.


8. Watering system – Watering yourself will give you good exercise. But if you want to take your greenhouse gardening to the next level, look into an automated watering system. Dripping, misting, watering all can be done if you happen to be out of town or sick.


9. Benches and Shelves – Probably the least important of supplies, some good benches or shelves can give you more layers of planting space.


10 Heaters – From gas or electric, if you live in cold climates and want to start seeds early, you will need a good heater. Gas and propane heaters can circulate warm air from the floor up.


11. Pest control – No matter how tight a ship you like to run, intruding bugs will always find a way in. Look into environmentally safe sprays, traps without pesticides or even other insects such as lady bugs and praying mantises, which both control destructive insects.


12. Seedling supplies – heat mats, heating coils and potting trays encourages an even quicker, more successful grow starts with less shock. And again, if you want to start planting earlier in colder climates, these can help.


Remember, everything depends on your particular situation. Whether you’re a weekend gardener or a professional horticulturist, keep it simple.
