Decorating 101: Cottage-Style Décor

If you’re looking to create a light, airy look in your home, cottage-style décor is a perfect choice. You can easily create a budget-friendly, comfortable, beautiful home with this type of decorating. It doesn’t matter what style of home you live in—you can easily transform your current look into a vintage look for very little money. Do you just adore rooms that look as though they float on the breeze? Then you should definitely try out this look, as you’ll be sure to love it.

Use Light Colors
Light colors are the key to creating this look. Many have the mistaken belief that the only color that should be used in this décor is white. The truth is, you can make the room light and airy while providing interest and depth with soft pastel shades of blue, aqua, yellow, pink, and green, combined with a healthy dose of white.

Make Great Use of Paint!
If you’re look to create a dramatic change in your home’s appearance, painting is one of the most affordable things you can do. Don’t be afraid to paint your walls in any of the pastel colors listed above. Paint opposite walls only and leave the other walls white for a truly original look. Then you can trim baseboards in a contrasting shade.

Paint is also a great way to create furniture that looks worn. For a vintage look, paint an end table or coffee table white or a pastel color and sand the edges lightly. You should be able to find some great bargains on small tables at garage sales and flea markets.

Surprising Floors
When most people consider flooring, they think of wood, tile, or carpet. In a cottage décor, wood floors are preferable. Any type of wood will do, although light-colored wood planks are best. You can choose to leave them as they are or paint them a shade of your choosing.

To create a unique and inspiring look, consider stenciling the perimeter of the floor or your own area rug. If you already have a carpet that’s light-colored, then that will work as well. Just use vintage-looking rugs to anchor your furnishings.

Create Interest with Furnishings
In terms of furnishings, you can use old or new. Try to keep the wood light in color if you’re going with new solid oak furniture. You can make furniture particularly warm and inviting by upholstering it with small pastel floral prints. Toss throw pillows on your sofa and chairs, mixing and matching the patterns. Absolutely anything you like will work.

For your wooden coffee tables, end tables and mission bookcases, you can really put your imagination to work. Are you able to get your hands on an old door? Then get creative, whether you decide to cut it down, paint, sand, or stencil it. Once you add legs, you’ll have a coffee table unlike any other.

Think Simple When You Accessorize
With this design style, accessories can be anything you like. However, you want to avoid overdoing it, as you don’t want to end up with rooms that look messy or cluttered. Just select a few simple pieces and display them around the room. A perfect touch here might be a simple white vase filled with wildflowers. This simply stack a couple of old books on an end table and place the vase on top. What would also work well here are small lamps with beaded lampshades.

When it comes to cottage décor, there’s really no rhyme or reason to this design style. Just be sure you love all the furniture and accessories you choose, and it will all end up falling together. Remember to have fun and enjoy creating this beautiful, inexpensive, new look.
