Paint an Accent Wall
Think about painting a wall to act as an accent wall, if you want this simply paint the wall in a bold color. Doing this will make the room appear larger while giving it a stylish feel at the same time. Ensure that the color of the other walls is complementary to the color of the bold wall so that it doesn’t seem out of place.

However, you should stay away from dark colors. If the accent wall is going to be painted in a bold color you shouldn’t choose black, dark blue, red or dark green. Instead a color like pink, yellow or aquamarine will work perfectly. Painting a small room in dark colors only visually diminishes the size of the area.

Choose Furniture that Fits the Size of Your Room
Furniture should be in scale. This means not putting a huge sleigh bed in a small bedroom. The family room follows the same rules. The pieces you find should well in the room without dominating the area it is placed in. Bumping into every piece of furniture while you’re walking around would be a problem and is something that you definitely want to avoid.

Find Furniture that Works as Storage, Too
You should also look for pieces that can pull double duty, especially when working with a small room. Wooden chests and similar pieces are great for pulling double duty as they can be used like a coffee table or side table and can also be used as storage for other items in the room. This way you will be left with more room and you will have extra storage space in a small area

Utilize as much vertical space as possible in your room. So much more storage are and design space can be added when you maximize the height of your walls. You can get a great vertical storage space out of pieces such as bookshelves and armoires.

Shelving attached to the wall is another perfect idea. Design and functional space would be the functions of the shelving. The shelves are the right place to add style to the area if you place some of your knickknacks and books in an interesting manner.

Let in Some Light to Open Up a Room
Your room should get as much natural light as possible. A room looks bigger and brighter with natural light. Keep your window treatments simple with something like a pair of plain drapes or blinds. Reflect light in the room and make it look larger by adding mirrors to the walls.

Choose Lighting that Doesn’t Overwhelm the Space
If the lighting fixtures hang or are very large you should avoid them. Track lighting is a good idea to go with because it will keep the room well-lit while not taking up much space.

You shouldn’t have to work too hard and be bored when you are decorating a small space. If you keep things simple and functional while adding small aspect of your style to the room, you will begin to really enjoy your small space as much as possible.
