How To Create A Focal Point
Some rooms have a natural focal point already, but other rooms may need you to add something in order to create a focal point. But before you add anything to the room, be sure to take the time to look closely at that room to see what it already has to offer. For instance, you might already have something like a fireplace that is a natural focal point that just needs to be played up when decorating.
When examining a room for focal points, look at the large pieces you have in there such as a wood bookcase, an entertainment center, wood dressers, or even a couch. If you already have something you can use, creating a focal point might be as easy as rearranging some furniture. Otherwise, you might have to start from scratch to choose the proper focal point for a room.
The Fireplace as a Focal Point
A fireplace is one of the best natural focal points there is. If theres already one in a room, then there are plenty of ways you can draw attention to that fireplace.
By arranging the furniture around the fireplace, you can create an instant focal point, but there are also other avenues you can take. You might draw attention to that area by painting the wall the fireplace is on a different color than the rest of the room. By changing the style of the fireplace or even adding a new mantle to it, you can draw more attention to that area of the room. Then top the mantle with eye-catching dcor items, or hang a large piece of art over it.
The Couch as a Focal Point
Do you have a favorite couch that would make a great focal point? You can create this with some rearranging of the room. The couch needs to be in great condition, though if its not, then you can add a slipcover to it.
By adding colorful or patterned pillows or a throw to the couch, you can help draw attention to it. The rest of the furniture should be arranged so its facing the couch. If your couch is large, place it in the middle of the longest wall in the room. Side tables can be added to the couch as well.
The Armoire or Entertainment Center as a Focal Point
If you want to highlight an entertainment center or armoire in a family or media room, you need to make sure you concentrate on the quality of the product. Youre not going to want a cheap-looking entertainment center, after all, to be the main focus of the room. Thus, be sure to invest in an attractive piece of furniture thats also of decent quality.
You might also consider finding a piece with doors in order to hide any electronics. You can also add flower arrangements, candles, and frames to the furnishing for some additional style.
These are just some of the many ways you can create a focal point in a room. After all, you will probably want to show off different pieces in different room. For instance, many people choose to have their bed be the focal point of a bedroom. By using a little creativity, youll be able to show off and highlight your focal point in any room.
