Alternative Patio Roof Covers
When people hear the term patio roof covers they tend to only think about awnings. While it is true that awnings are the most popular options available they are by no means the end all and be all of roof covers; in fact depending on your needs there’s probably something out there that would do an even better job and maybe, if you’re lucky, you might even save a few bucks along the way.
The first upfront decision you need to make is whether or not you want to use a custom roof cover or go with one of the pre-manufactured systems that are available. Obviously you’ll have more options available to you if you go at a custom solution however, as with all things custom-made, you’ll end up spending more money. Let your budget beer guide for this decision; especially since there are plenty of kits and prebuilt systems available that look just as good as many custom jobs but can be installed by the average homeowner on a weekend at the fraction of the cost of custom.
You will also want to take into consideration your climate when deciding what type of patio cover you want to install. If you live in a dry climate like Dallas one of your main concerns is going to be using UV resistant materials that will not degrade in the harsh sunlight whereas if you live in Newport Beach mold and mildew resistance will be more important. One of the newer and more interesting manufacturers producing all weather patio covers is Alumawood. What makes their products so great is the fact that everything is constructed out of aluminum yet patterned to look just like wood; so really it’s the best of both worlds.
Lastly you want to want to think about what sort of design you can be happy with. Patio roof covers come in a huge array of different styles; some functional others more decorative. Pergolas, for instance, are very decorative but until they are covered with several seasons worth of climbing vines they don’t offer much protection. Alternately there are many solid panel designs that offer excellent protection but little decorative value. The best solution for you probably lies somewhere in the middle of both of these options. Take a look around and try to find a solution that marries the functional and decorative in a way you can appreciate.
