A septic tank is an underground wastewater or drainage treatment system. In every house, septic tanks are used to treat and dispose off household wastewater into the main sewage system. Like everything else in the world, a septic system also requires regular maintenance so that it runs efficiently without giving any troubles. Usually septic tanks are made of concrete and in some cases they are made from fiberglass. A septic tank can be termed as a waterproof box that doesn’t allow the wastewater to leak out. Every tank has an entry point as well as an exit point and these ports are attached to proper sewer pipelines. The wastewater enters the septic tank from the sewer pipe which is laid underground. Inside the tank these waste water is treated, detoxified and cleansed. This detoxified water is then released to the underground water table.
How often a septic tank is to be pumped depends on the size of the tank. Ideally, a normal septic tank should be pumped every 2 years. If it is a 1000 gallon tank, you must at least clean it once in every 3 years. You should also calculate the number of people living in the home so as to judge the amount of wastewater flowing in on a daily basis. for tanks filling with huge concentrates of wastewater, annual pumping is recommended.
When you are doing the pumping, the entire content of the tank is emptied out. Thus the process eliminates the contaminated waste material stored in the tank. You have to introduce a pack of activation bacteria into the septic pipes so that they multiples inside the tank. This will decompose the waste particles in an organic manner. Note that you should not introduce any bleach or strong chemicals into the tank because it may kill the bacteria present in it. This would damage the entire septic system. similarly do not flush waste particles made of foodstuffs containing fats and oils. This can hamper the system. Solid food wastes can also result in blockage of your septic pipe lines. Likewise do not dispose any plastic waste into your drains. This would again cause severe blockage as they are considered as nondegradable substances. Disposing plastic into the sewage is harmful to the environment as they block the natural cycle of water.
Every septic tank contains a specific quantity of wastewater. You should make sure that the wastewater doesn’t exceed this limit. Various water conservation techniques are now introduced that reduces the production of wastewater. Modern toilets are fashioned to consume less water, especially while flushing. There are also water meters available in the market that can help you in measuring the level of water consumed. If your sewage tank is reaching its maximum capacity, you should cut down water usage on washing and running baths. Besides, keeping the ground water safe, water conservation also promotes overall environmental protection.
