Rumpus Room – Home Renovations Tips
As our family grows we are going to need more room in the house. Once we all get in one room with a few kids the noise can be quite deafening. Everyone is trying to do their own thing. Some of the kids might be playing video games while Dad is trying to watch football on TV and everyone is generally getting annoyed with each other. Does this sound like you. What you need is another room. A rumpus room where the kids go off and do their own thing. Or maybe Dad needs somewhere to put a pool table. Where are we going to find this extra room.
One option which is popular these days is to convert the garage into a games room. Leave the poor old car outside or build a carport for it. Most garages these days are attached the house anyway and have direct access. If your garage is at least a double you are laughing. Plenty of room for a rumpus/games type room. What usually happens is the garage doors come off. You can sell these to help offset some of the costs. These are then replaced with windows to completely fill the gap. This then makes a quite tidy change and will blend in with the rest of the house.
Many garages haven’t been lined so that is a priority. We will probably need to line both ceiling and walls. You could get in a professional for this or have a go at it yourself. The walls would be no problem for you although the ceilings could prove a bit tricky. If you use something lighter on the ceiling such as ply you could probably manage. If you make up a couple of T shapes out of a couple of pieces of lumber then you will make it easier. When you get the sheet into place have someone jam the couple of T shapes up to hold it there. Then you will have both hands free to drive in some tacks.
The only other area you will need to dress up will be the floor as it will be just raw concrete. Have a couple of neat tricks for you here. First use a roller to paint the floor with a nice bright paving paint. After the floor is dry go round and use masking tape to put random shapes on the floor. Use your imagination and do anything you fancy. Then take another bright color of paving paint and a roller and paint the whole lot again. When it is all dry gently peel off the masking tape and you will have your patterns left in the original color. This can look quite effective and be an unusual and budget floor finish.
The other trick is to visit your auction houses and recycled lumber yards and tile shops and collect up heaps of random tiles cheaply. Because there is only a few of each tile left they are very cheap to buy. Then you get home with these boxes of random color tiles. This is where your imagination gets into gear. Work out roughly how many of each tile you have and do some color coordination. From there see if you can design a trendy mosaic pattern using all these different tiles. Lay them to the pre-arranged pattern and the effect will be magic. It will be a real talking point for visitors.
So there you have it. A rumpus room that you and the kids will enjoy for years to come that has been a fun project and not too heavy on the budget.
